hola!!
so, it´s been pretty interesting so far here in santa elena. i´m living with the other volunteers in a really neat house up in the mountains. everything is made of clay, wood, and straw. it´s all open air, pretty neat! i survived the 24 hour bus ride from caracas, miraculously only with one military stop where we all had to empty our bags for the soldiers (some volunteers got stopped 6 times!) it´s VERY different here, that´s for sure. i speak no spanish, but i´m taking some lessons now. i´m going to be volunteering in the hospital, working in the lab there, and also with disabled kids, and teaching some english. don´t have too much to write, but there is lots to say. i have been just trying to adjust, most of the time i feel like i´m having a dream or something! i haven´t taken any photos yet, as i´m going to be here for 2 months there´s no urgent rush. but soon i will write more details and also post some pictures! i have an address here if anyone feels like sending something (it´s a box in brasil because the post in venezuela takes years!!)

Hey Kate! Thanks for the email updates. Wow! I can imagine some of the challenges - I think this is what they call "culture shock". I encourage you to give yourself time to settle in there.
Hope you are finding "the Message" interesting reading and meditating. Here's one of my favorite parts, from Ephesians 3: (I personlized it a bit!)
Hey Kate: all this is proceeding along lines planned all along by God and then executed in Christ Jesus. When your trust in him, you're free to say whatever needs to be said, bold to go wherever you need to go, to do whatever you need to do. So don't let your present challenges get you down.
Your Mom and I pray for you many times every day. Our response is to get down on our knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and earth. We ask him to strengthen you by his Spiritnot a brute strength but a glorious inner strengththat Christ will live in you as you open the door and invite him in, moment by moment. And we ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you'll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ's love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.
God can do anything, you know far more than you could ever imagine or guess or request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by working within us, his Spirit deeply and gently within us.
We love you!

hey Kate----
I wish I was with you to share this adventure. Yesterday I only had time for a "hello" but today I thought I would let you know that I am envious of your open air hut and the warmth and the FREEDOM (-:
Enjoy every moment and try to get a shower into your schedule now and again

Kate,
I'm glad you've gotten to your volunteering destination without much of a kaffufle. And learning Spanish! coolz. Now you can be multilingual Kate-bott, but not only that you get to work with kids too. fun fun. ;). It is rainy and gross in Vancouver, so good thing you are missing it.
Anyhow, I second what your parents wrote above. See what God can do while you're there--you can only gain by doing so.
I'm praying for you, goofball.
Love,
Matthea
